When you have an acne problem, the first thing that you should do is to try out simple lifestyle changes like washing your face on a daily basis, drinking lots of water. Consider a diet of fiber rich foods instead of fatty and sweet foods, and sleep at least eight hours every night. However, if lifestyle changes do not work, you can consider topical and oral medications like acne capsules, pills, creams, lotions, and gels.
These medications often contain benzoyl peroxide which works by opening the pores of the skin and clearing the clogs and blockages in the skin pores and hair follicles. Usually, topical medications work perfectly in eliminating acne. However, if these medications worsen the skin infection, you can consider cosmetic and surgical procedures.
Should you opt for the laser acne treatment?
Severe acne cases are often characterized by excessive sebum blocked by dead skin cells. In these cases, the acne producing bacteria is already very prominent and skin inflammation has spread all throughout the face of the patient. The skin cell regeneration process also slows down and the hormonal levels are quite high. If you have severe acne, common acne medications will not work for you. Thus, you should probably get a laser acne treatment.
Laser acne treatment can be the answer for people who already have too many scars and blemishes, not to mention swelling skin that can cause too much embarrassment. This modern procedure can be used to eliminate not just the acne-producing bacteria, but also the blemishes left behind by a severe acne breakout. It can also restore the skin’s original color.
Laser acne treatment is also recommended for patients who have persistent acne breakouts. Sometimes, acne breakouts happen even before the previous acne manifestations start to heal. Laser treatments can target the root cause of the problem and not just the existing pimples and lesions on the skin’s exterior.
Targeting the root cause of acne problems
Laser acne treatment generally works by stopping the bacterial growth which causes acne break-outs. During the procedure, the dermatologists use light and heat to kill the bacteria and reduce the scarring effects of acne.
Laser treatment procedure can also be used to shrink the sebaceous glands that produce the oils. Once the sebaceous glands contract, they will no longer be able to produce excessive amounts of oily sebum. If the body’s oil levels are diminished, the hair follicles and the pores of the skin will not be blocked. As a result, the chances for acne recurrence are greatly reduced as there is no more breeding ground for bacteria.
Having second thoughts…
Just like any other treatment procedure, laser acne treatment may have some side effects to the patient. For example, pregnant women are not allowed to undergo the procedure because laser radiation can potentially cause birth defects. For other people, the treatment may also cause burns and other skin irritations. It may cause inflammation, swelling, and redness. Because of the risks involved, many doctors recommend the use of other acne treatment medications before opting for a laser acne treatment.

I’ve read/researched this on the internet and it sounds like a cheap and simple treatment. Does it work? Mixing baking soda with water to form a paste and applying it to acne prone areas?

Before considering your acne treatment, it is important to know a few quick facts about acne vulgaris and acne treatment
No direct link has been established between acne and diet (pizza, nuts, sweets, chocolate )
There is no link between acne and diet. In particular, no cause and effect has been established between acne and chocolate, dairy products (milk products), shellfish, sweets, or fatty foods (french fries, pizza, etc.). Healthy diet is good for your overall health but it will not be enough to get rid of acne.
Acne cannot be cured (There is NO acne cure); it can be effectively treated (see acne treatment) and controlled (but there is no permanent acne cure)
There is a widespread belief that acne is curable and that a course of antibiotics is all that is required to treat acne. People will often make statements such as my acne treatment did not work because when I stopped the tablets the acne came back again, and after my acne treatment the acne only improved but did not completely disappear. It must be made clear that continued acne treatment is required and that there is no cure for acne (although isotretinoin may cause long-term remission of the disease).
Acne is NOT a result of poor hygiene
Dirt and surface skin oils do not cause acne. However, accumulation of daily dirt on the skin and excessive skin oils should be removed by gently washing your face twice a day with a mild soap, pat dry and use an appropriate acne treatment.
Constant washing does not improve acne
Constant washing does not improve acne. Excessive scrubbing dries and irritates skin further and can actually make your acne worse.
Getting a tan does not clear acne
Although there has been little scientific evidence that sunlight has any reliable beneficial effect on acne, and even less evidence for the benefits of solariums; nevertheless, there has been a resurgence of interest in effects of sunlight on acne. Before recommending such acne treatment one should carefully evaluate any positive effect of using sunlight in acne treatment against the possible long-term carcinogenetic effects of ultraviolet light on the skin. In addition, some studies have shown that acne treatment using sunlight can even worsen acne.
Not only teenagers can have acne, adults get acne too (adult acne)
Even though, acne vulgaris is mainly a skin disease of teenagers; the prevalence of acne in teenage boys and girls is so high that acne is considered almost universal in this age group; nevertheless, adults suffer from acne, too.
Acne should be treated and controlled, do not just “let acne run its course”
Even though, in most cases acne will “run its course”; nevertheless, untreated acne can leave you forever with unaesthetic acne scars, reminding you about your teenage acne skin problems for the rest of your life. There are multiple acne treatments available; therefore, acne should be treated and controlled, avoiding any potential unaesthetic acne scars in the future.
Stress does not cause acne, but it can exacerbate the existing condition
A study of 215 graduating medical students showed that 67% believed that stress plays a role in acne exacerbations. Anxiety was considered an acne-exacerbating factor by 74% of students and their relatives. There is also evidence that stress may exacerbate acne during examinations. It has also been noted that treatment with biofeedback mechanisms is useful in some acne sufferers.
Exercise does not increase risk of acne
According to Stanford University School of Medicine (Stanford.edu) research and contrary to popular beliefs, exercise and sweating during exercise do not increase acne in athletes.
There are misconceptions regarding variably of too little or too much sexual activity and acne.
There are myths regarding too little or too much sexual activity and acne.
First sex and acne myth that too much sex or masturbation may worsen acne.
Second sex and acne myth that somehow when females begin having a regular sex life their acne will be improved.
Although acne is linked to androgen metabolism at the level of the sebaceous glands; nevertheless, there is no evidence supporting neither of these rather strange extrapolations.

I’ve noticed that after a few months, acne treatments fail me. What are some good treatments that you have used? Do you have any allergies? I think I am allergic to benzoyl peroxide; I developed a mild irritation. Currently I am using the Vichy Normaderm line but I am looking for something to use on the acne, not any facial washes/lotions since Vichy is great when it comes to washes and lotions.

Brian Dolezal asked:
One of the most common skin problems affecting people around the world is acne, which means that effective acne treatments are constantly in high demand. A problem that many sufferers have to deal with is how to afford the acne products that they need. Every day, people battle this skin problem with the assumption that they could not fit much needed acne treatments into their budget. The truth is, however, that a simple recommendation from a doctor or dermatologist may be the answer.
Depending on the severity of the acne and your individual health insurance policy, prescribed acne treatments may be covered. This means that you may have to pay very little or nothing at all, depending on the policy requirements and coverage. Because every issuer and policy is different, the best way to learn whether or not certain type of acne products are covered under your insurance is to simply review your agreement carefully or call your local agent for specifics.
If prescribed acne treatments are covered under your current health insurance policy, you may be able to have your health insurance billed directly for the prescription or you may have to pay for your own acne treatments and later be reimbursed by your insurance company. In order to get approval, you will need a written doctor’s recommendation or prescription. In other words, you would not be able to claim acne treatments on your health insurance policy simply by self-diagnosis and purchasing whatever product appeals most to you.
What type of acne do you have? Most acne is categorized as mild, moderate or severe. A mild case of acne will appear as occasional breakouts, but require little or no treatment. Moderate acne is where the discomfort really becomes noticeable and may require stronger acne products for treatment. Severe acne, which is the worst and most uncomfortable, typically requires some type of medical intervention by way of prescribed acne treatments or certain acne products.
Currently, there are a number of acne products on the market. Some may require a doctor’s prescription, but others are often available as over-the-counter acne treatments. In order to be covered under a health insurance policy, however, acne treatments must be recommended by a physician or dermatologist.
It can often be difficult to know which acne products work and which will prove to be the best for your individual situation. If you find yourself wondering how to choose from a sea of acne treatments, it’s a good idea to read various product reviews from those who are either familiar with the product or have a detailed description of its potential for treating acne.
When shopping for acne treatments, the best isn’t necessarily that which carries the highest price tag. The product that will best treat your skin problem may or may not be the most expensive. The best product will be the one that provides you with the best and quickest results. Because one of the leading causes of acne is stress, knowing whether or not your health insurance will cover the costs associated with acne treatments will ease your mind and possibly your budget.
